Power

All magick runs on power. Power is simply energy that has gathered and accumulated to a degree where something can be done with it. Everyone has energy (or else our bodies and minds couldn’t work), but do we all have power? One of the goals of Wiccan spiritual practice is to be a generating source of constant power. We seek empowerment.

Power is too often seen as a dirty word in our culture. We hear phrases like “power corrupts” that makes us think the path to living in greater power means a path of self-servitude, manipulation, or greed. Simply put, that’s just garbage! Power, like all energy, is a neutral force. It’s what you do with it that counts. There is always a choice.

In many magickal traditions you’ll hear the statements power over and power with. Power over is the use of power for dominance, control, or harm. Power with is the use of power in the spirit of cooperation and self-change. Wiccans prefer power with, not just because of the set of ethical standards many of us live by, but because the use of power with, is just more sustainable. Let’s use an example.

Let’s say you’re part of a sports team that has a really important game coming up. While other team members might be praying for a win, you decide to work some magick to give your team a unique edge.

Using power over, you might enchant the opposite team to perform poorly or make the conditions of the playing field unfavorable to them. Using power with, you would instead enchant your own mind to become focused and clear. You might call upon the elemental energies of the playing field to grant you strength. By using power with, you’re effecting change within yourself which will stick around after the game. Had you used the power for dominance and control, you’d know that not only was the game not fair, but you’ve depleted your energy by sending it out onto someone else for negative means. Again, Wiccans want to live empowered lives, not depleted ones.

Learning Wicca by living its philosophy and practicing its rituals means you’ll naturally collect power as you go. Every day we get to choose between standing in power, or standing in a state of depletion. Which will you choose?
